Minnesota has enacted a new sick leave law which takes effect Aug 1, 2013. If you are an employer with 21 or more employees and offer your employees sick leave, you now must allow them to use the sick leave to care for the illness or injury of an adult child, spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent, or stepparent.
Some things to remember:
- Employers are not required to offer sick leave paid or unpaid.
- Employers may limit the use of sick leave to care for these relatives to 160 hours in a 12-month period. There is no limit for minor children.
- Employers are advised to update their handbooks and educate their supervisors of this change.
